Because of this tight dependency on hardware and software, it has been almost impossible for a software developer to build a great system without deep support from the OEM to build appropriate hardware. Google invested a lot to get some OEMs to support the tango hw spec. MSFT, Magic Leap etc are building their own hardware, and it’s ultimately why Apple has been so successful with ARKit as they have been able to do both.
